Just arrived from the second owner who owned and cared for this car since 1972! Not advertised previous to our acquisition. It is not often we get a chance to own something as special as this, but we hoped it could be passed on to a great new home!  Restored in the mid 1980s, complete with a detailed and chronological record of receipts throughout these past 46 years. We are excited to offer this amazing Tiger that will provide the next owner the same sound of its million dollar+ cousin the famous Shelby Cobra, for a fraction of the cost!
If you old enough to remember the 1960s, you might remember seeing Detective Maxwell Smart drive one of these in the hit TV series, "Get Smart"! Or maybe you saw the more recent remake starring non-other than Steve Carell. If you're still not familiar with this brutally fast and loud version of a cute English Sunbeam, here's a brief introduction from the car guy perspective!
Formula 1 champion Jack Brabham was the first to suggest to Norman Garrad, who was the competition manager for the British firm, Rootes, to fit a Ford V8 into their Sunbeam sports car. Garrads' son, Ian was the West Coast Sales Manager for the company and happened to live close to Carrol Shelby! You can easily see where this is going, right? By 1964 Carrol Shelby himself presented the white prototype version called the "Thunderbolt" to the company for consideration. I won't spoil the story by telling you how Lord Rootes felt about the "secret and undisclosed to him" project!
We strongly recommend you read the detailed story how Carrol Shelby and Ken Miles personally worked with the company that successfully brought some 7k units to market. A quick Google search for the Sunbeam Tiger "Wiki" page will give you the full story.  The history as it pertains to this particular example is equally interesting and unique! About 10 years into ownership or about 1984, the previous and 2nd owner decided to fully restore this car and make upgrades where appropriate. With a larger radiator, period correct aftermarket alloy wheels, and a few other minor tweaks, what you see before you is possibly the most fun you can have from compact V8 powered English car! The original 260 ci V8 was also replaced at that time with a more robust andpowerful 302 ci Ford. The 260ci engines were known to be weak and failed commonly. Our pricing reflects this non-original motor and as such, is of course not a numbers matching to the original chassis. The transmission and rear end are original however, and are documented.
No matter where you look, the care and pride of 46 years of ownership shines! We understand how wonderful it is to review the pictures of this car digitally, she is very photogenic, don't you think? But let us warn you. If you don't come by to see this little beast in person, you'll not likely be able to understand and appreciate the way she sounds and feels! With her cousin sky rocketing in value these past 10 years, Tigers like this car won't be affordable forever!
Care to grab the "Tiger by the tail" anyone?
